Estimated Intensity
Strong (6/10)
Three controlled detonations at Fort Jackson's training range at approximately 8:35 AM EST on March 1 were heard across the entire Columbia Midlands region. A temperature inversion that morning (warm air above cold air, with visible fog) caused the sound waves to bounce off the atmospheric layer and travel much farther than normal. The 178th Engineer Battalion of the SC National Guard was also conducting explosive detonations at nearby McCrady Training Center the same day.
